Residential School compensation campaign

Efforts to get compensation for the day students from Indian Residential Schools are gaining momentum in the courts, and politically.

The two BC First Nations who started the case, the Sechelt and the Kamloops, say a deadline for the government to appeal the class action certification has passed.

Councillor Garry Feschuk of the Sechelt says thousands of people from hundreds of First Nations are now included in the case.

Feschuk also says with the federal election coming up, they hope the major parties will publicly support a negotiated settlement.

Feschuk says the recent report from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission is also helping.  He says an out of court settlement would be an important act of reconciliation that’s within the government’s reach.
