75th Anniversary of the Sinking of HMCS ALBERNI

August 21 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Free

At noon on 21st of August, 1944, the Royal Canadian Navy ship HMCS ALBERNI was off the coast of Great Britain having recently participated with the D-Day invasion. The German submarine U-480, with stealth coating on her hull, snuck up on the Alberni and fired a torpedo into her hull. Sinking in 30 seconds, 59 Canadian crewmen perished. 30 men survived. On August 21, 2019 at noon precisely, the HMCS ALBERNI Museum and Memorial (HAMM) will conduct a special Remembrance Day tolling of our ship’s bell 59 times for each Canadian lost. A small reception will follow in the main hallway. The public is encouraged to sign up to ring the bell during the ceremony. To sign up to be one of the bell ringers, please contact Bob at bob.sackett@alberniproject.org.
