Comox Valley rugby player celebrates win on national stage https://www.mycomoxvalleynow.com/91955/news/comox-valley/comox-valley-rugby-player-celebrates-win-on-national-stage/ Tue, 18 Jul 2023 22:06:50 +0000 https://www.mycomoxvalleynow.com/?p=91955

After reaching a large milestone in his career, a professional rugby player is celebrating how far the sport has taken him.

A 2014 graduate of G.P. Vanier Secondary School in the Comox Valley, Foster Dewitt can consider himself amongst the best in the sport. Dewitt currently plays with the New England Free Jacks in Major League Rugby.

Earlier this month, his team would become the new champions of the league by defeating Chicago 25 – 24 after overcoming a 17 – 13 deficit at half-time.

It is a win that is still sinking in for him, after starting with humble grassroots.

“It feels really good and I’ve put in a lot of hard work over the last 12 years so it feels really good to see it pay off,” said Dewitt. “I keep moving forward and keep working hard so I’ll see what’s next on the agenda for me.”

Dewitt says he first got into the sport through high school, having been surrounded by many others who championed the sport. He adds what grabbed his attention was the flow of the game.

“My dad, he played when he was there and he kind of pushed me towards it and once I started, I never looked back,” he said.

“I guess when I was younger it was a contact sport and everyone is involved on both sides of the ball, so everyone gets to touch the ball, everyone gets to tackle. It’s continuous. There’s a lot of flow to the game, it doesn’t have a lot of stop, start.”

He adds he was hooked by the time he was 14 and qualified for a provincial team.

Following the win, Dewitt will be travelling to the pacific islands with Rugby Canada to play on the international stage, battling Tonga on Aug. 10 and 15 which he says is a bit of a step up.

“The international stuff is definitely a higher standard, but there’s a lot of good players in the MLR,” he said. “But these pacific island teams will be very strong.”

He says for anyone looking to pursue the sport, or any others, to put your head down and go for it.

“Just keep working hard and don’t let anyone tell you that you won’t make it, you just got to keep putting your head down and put in the hard yards and it will pay off,” said Dewitt.

He thanks his coaches at Vanier, Pete Park and Ken Erikson along with his dad, Garry Dewitt, for getting him into the sport.

Courtenay to donate land for family affordable housing https://www.mycomoxvalleynow.com/86941/news/comox-valley/courtenay-to-donate-land-for-family-affordable-housing/ Sun, 04 Sep 2022 16:00:26 +0000 https://www.mycomoxvalleynow.com/?p=86941

More affordable housing for families will be coming to Courtenay with a donation of land to Habitat for Humanity.

The .11 acre property on Lake Trail Road is being donated by the City of Courtenay and will be transferred for $1 with the city’s prior approval of a development plan.

The city says its recently adopted Official Community Plan includes a goal of “housing choices for all.” Mayor Bob Wells says the donation fits well with the community’s goals.

“Our council enthusiastically supported this land donation, and we’re very excited this property will help Habitat for Humanity build more homes in our community for those who need them,” said Wells.

“This project fits perfectly with the housing goals of our new Official Community Plan, and will truly be life-changing for the future homeowners who will live here.”

The plan designates the area on Lake Trail Road as a neighbourhood centre, which supports multi-residential and other mixed uses, according to the city.

They say a review of the zoning bylaws will begin this year, and a zoning amendment will be required to support Habitat’s plan for development.

Habitat for Humanity Vancouver Island North executive director Jeff West says the land transfer will be an important opportunity in getting more residents a safe place to live.

More information can be found on the Habitat North Island website.

COURTENAY, B.C. – The arms of Glacier Kings players were raised in victory for the first time this season on Saturday night.

The VIJHL team hosted cross-town rivals the Campbell River Storm at the Comox Valley Sports Centre on Oct. 27th.

The game went down to the wire, and was a back and forth affair.

After the first period, the score was 1-1 with goals from Glacier King Ben Alexander (assisted by Noah Malthaner and Rick Takeda) and Storm Damon Porter, on an assist from Austin Dennison.

In the second period, Finn Withey gave Comox Valley a 2-1 lead at the 1:20 mark on a power-play goal. Before the sound of the buzzer, Reid Wheeldon scored.

Going into the third period, the game was tied at two goals apiece.

At the 6:04 mark, Ben Alexander scored his second goal of the game off an assist from Withey, making it 3-2 for the G-Kings.

The Storm weren’t done fighting, though. At 10:01, Scott Rademaker scored on the power-play off an assist from Logan Cursley and Reid Wheeldon.

That goal sent the game into an extra period.

At 19:55, Finn Withey played the hero, scoring his second goal of the game off an assist from Noah Malthaner.

With that, the Glacier Kings earned their first win of the season. The team’s record now sits at 1-14-0-1.

Withey was named the game’s home star, while Campbell River’s Jaden Little earned away star honours.

Up next for the Glacier Kings is a meeting with the Saanich Braves on Friday, Nov. 2nd, while the Storm will face the Kerry Park Islanders.

COMOX, B.C. - Airport Elementary will host a special guest later this week.

The Comox school will welcome a team traveling with the CFL's Grey Cup on Thursday. The trophy is handed out at the end of the Canadian Football League season to the championship winning team.

School Principal Al Johnson said it's set to be a very special day for everyone at the school.

"We'll have an assembly, dignitaries from the base (19 Wing Comox) joining us and it's my understanding that there's a team that accompanies the cup and they will be doing a presentation as well," he said.

"Most of the boys and girls will be wearing spirit wear, you know CFL uniforms, NFL uniforms, NBA and hockey uniforms just to show their support for the Grey Cup."

He said the school was contacted by the base, who organized the event.

"We're involved quite heavily with them and we just have the good fortune to be in close proximity, so we get to see the cup," Johnson explained.

The visit will start at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 4th and last through to around 11:15, when the team will move on to the next stop on the Grey Cup tour.
