$2 million donation being welcomed to protect property at Puntledge River

Courtenay-Comox MLA Ronna-Rae Leonard is welcoming a large donation to protect a timber reservation in the Comox Valley.

The Old Growth Nature Fund is donating $2 million to protect 32 hectares of timber reservation at the BC Hydro property at Puntledge River.

316 hectares at eight sites across B.C. are protected by the BC and Federal Governments and seven land trust and conservancy organizations.

Leonard said she’s thrilled so much land is being protected and saving wildlife in the area, especially in the Comox Valley.

“I am grateful for the commitment and capacity of the Comox Valley land Trust to identify needs and work positively with our government, as it has been instrumental in achieving our shared goals to conserve old growth and protect at-risk wildlife.”

The Old Growth Nature Fund funded nearly $8 million for the initiative and over $8 million from private donors and organizations.

Environment and Climate Change Canada is providing an additional $50 million over three years to support old growth forests.
