Small fire near Sayward extinguished, Harmac fire under control

A small wildfire that started near Sayward on Wednesday is now out.

The BC Wildfire Service declared the fire was out Thursday afternoon. The fire was at Haihte Lake, accessible by logging roads north of the Keta Lake Rest Area along Highway 19.

The fire was under 1,000 square feet in size.

There is only one other active wildfire on Vancouver Island, the ongoing fire in the wood waste piles at the Harmac Pacific mill site in Cedar. That fire is only one hectare in size and is under control.

So far this summer, the Island and coast region have managed to avoid any serious wildfire incidents.

Check the BC Wildfire Service’s map for the latest details.
