World-champ hammer thrower from Nanaimo in Olympic finals Sunday

Nanaimo’s own Ethan Katzberg was first in the hammer throw qualifying round at the Olympics on Friday, moving on to the finals.

His qualifying throw was more than two metres farther than the second-place competitor, another Canadian athlete from Chilliwack.

Katzberg, ranked number one in the world for the hammer throw, has a personal best record that’s only a few centimetres short of the Olympic record set in 1988.

For the final, he’s up against his fellow Canadian Rowan Hamilton as well as athletes from the USA, Ukraine, Norway, and several European Union nations.

It takes place on Sunday morning and can be streamed live on CBC Gem.
