The NDP nominates Gord Johns for Courtenay-Alberni riding in federal election

The NDP nominated Gord Johns as their candidate for Courtenay-Alberni in the next federal election.

The party says Johns, currently the NDP critic for mental health and harm reduction, was nominated on Sunday.

Party leader Jagmeet Singh says Johns has been a champion for not only his community, but also across Canada.

“He’s done important work in fighting for better mental health support for people, making life more affordable and getting critical funding back into Courtenay-Alberni,” said Singh.

During his time as member of parliament for the riding, Johns helped deliver free diabetes medication and birth control to those in need, dental care for kids and seniors, $10 a day daycare, paid sick days for workers, and passed laws for workers for better wages.

They say his work also includes increasing the volunteer firefighters tax credit to $6,000, securing funding for the community, and focusing on coastal protection.

Johns says he’s honoured to be nominated again for this riding, adding he will continue advocating for an easier and more affordable life for people in need.

The federal election is expected to kick off on or before October 20 next year.
