Violent crimes went down by 2 percent in first quarter, RCMP says

Violent crimes in Courtenay have gone down by two percent in the first quarter.

That comes from Comox Valley RCMP in their quarterly report, which focuses on reporting incidents between April 1 and June 30 this year.

They say this quarter saw 253 violent crime incidents in Courtenay, a 2 percent decrease from the 258 in last year’s first quarter.

Of these violent crimes, Assault saw an 11 percent decrease at 112, while harassment, sex offences, and extortion all had decreases of 6, 5, and 44 percents respectively.

Robberies saw a big jump compared to last year with 10 incidents, a 900 percent increase from the 1 incident in 2023. Uttering threats had a 14 percent increase.

Along with violent crimes, the report shows that calls for service had a 5 percent drop-down from last year, with traffic incidents, property, and alarm calls being the only ones to see an increase.

For property crimes, police report 629 incidents, a 2 percent increase from 614 in 2023. Break and entering had the biggest increase at 125 percent, while mischief to property didn’t change compared to last year.
