First step towards supportive housing at 925 Braidwood Road passes through Courtenay City Council

A long reported supportive housing and shelter in Courtenay has moved one step closer to reality.

Courtenay City Council passed a rezoning bylaw for 925 Braidwood Road on Wednesday, August 28, to permit shelters, supportive, and non-market housing.

The site would be split into two areas with one having a shelter with community services, offices, and supportive housing.

The second area would be developed for future non-market housing.

Letters against the development have been received by Council from residents of the neighbourhood saying they don’t care about them, something Coun. Doug Hillian said is not true.

“I reject the comment that’s been made by several of the letter writers that we don’t care about the people in the neighbourhood, I think we care deeply about the people in the neighbourhood.”

A development permit needs to be passed to finalize the design, as well as building and construction permits.

It’s projected the development permit will finalize sometime before the end of 2024, with building and construction permits finalizing in spring of 2025.
