Housing needs report presented to Village of Cumberland council

A final version of a Cumberland housing needs report has been released ahead of their October 1 council meeting.

As part of a new provincial requirement to adopt a new Official Community Plan, housing reports need to be attached with projections for units needed in five and 20 years.

A draft report was sent to council in May, identifying 300 new units needed by 2028 and 1,055 new units needed by 2043 using 2023 as a base year.

The updated report used 2021 as a base year, with 358 units needed in a five-year window, 58 more than the previous version.

Additionally, 1,350 new units are forecasted to be needed by 2041, a 186 unit increase from the May draft.

The purpose of the assessment is for communities to understand their housing situation and what kinds of units are needed.

All communities have a deadline of January 1, 2025, to submit a housing needs report.
