Violent crime and calls for service have gone up in Cumberland; says new report

Violent crime and calls for service have both gone up in Cumberland during the summer.

In a report about the second quarter, Comox Valley RCMP says Cumberland saw 265 Calls for Service between July 1 and September 30 this year, a 50 percent jump from the second quarter last year.

The report shows most calls were for Disturbances and Check Wellbeing, with 23 calls for Disturbances and 21 for Wellbeing, an increase of 130 and 110 percent respectively. Calls for threats, theft, mischief, and breach have also seen increases, ranging from 50 to 225 percent jumps compared to 2023.

Police say they got 26 violent crime files, a 73 percent increase from the 15 files last year, with 10 reports for uttering threats and eight for harassment. The hotspots for these crimes were in the area by Silecroft Road, Windermere Avenue, Second Street, and Penrith Avenue, and the area by Penrith, Third Street, Dunsmuir Avenue, and Second Street.

Only eight assaults were reported, and no files were reported on weapons offences, sex offences, extortion, and kidnapping.

41 property crimes took place this past summer, six more than 2023.

The main increases were from Auto Theft, other thefts, break and enters for buses and residential homes, and bike theft, making up 21 of the crimes.
