House cat dies after eating bird flu-tainted raw pet food

A brand of raw pet food sold in BC is being recalled after a house cat in Oregon died from avian flu.

The raw, frozen food is made from turkey organs and bone and is marketed for both cats and dogs under the Northwest Naturals brand. The Oregon-based company is recalling all one-kilogram packages sold with best-before dates between May 21, 2026 and June 23, 2026.

The US Department of Agriculture confirmed one cat in Oregon became infected with the H5N1 virus and died after eating the food. The animal was strictly an indoor cat and was not exposed to the virus through its environment, Oregon’s top veterinarian said in a statement.

Neither Health Canada nor the Canadian Food Inspection Agency have yet issued a recall.
