Cumberland Fire Chief hopes council applies for disaster risk funding

Cumberland Fire Rescue Society hopes to get provincial funding for disaster risk reduction.

In a report, Fire Chief Mike Williamson is requesting Village mayor and council to approve applying for a Union of BC Municipalities Community Emergency Preparedness Fund grant, with hopes of getting $100,00 in funding.

If approved, the money would support regional and localized access to more temporary equipment for extreme weather events.

Williamson says temporary equipment supports planning and response strategies to floods, extreme heat, and poor air quality.

“The proposed funding will support development of key messaging and the purchase of equipment to temporarily protect people, settlements, sensitive landscapes and waterways in the Comox Valley,” said Williamson.

He says the equipment they would buy from the funding includes five portable misting stations for areas with high traffic, two deployable air scrubber equipment for public facilities, extra flood equipment, and developing community education and engagement materials for weather impacts.

The report will be presented as part of tonight’s council meeting, which starts at 5:30 p.m.
