Kings Corner: January 17-19 weekend

WEEK IN REVIEW

The Glacier Kings only were awarded one game on the schedule last weekend at home but ultimately fell to the Victoria Cougars 1-0 for their second loss to them in back-to-back weekends.

It was a scoreless game for most of the game before Victoria was able to break through with a goal with just under five minutes left to put the game away.

Head Coach Curtis Toneff said despite defending and killing penalties well, he didn’t like much of the rest of his team’s game saying players were taking too long of shifts.

“Some guys were trying too much to be the guy that got the big goal, and I think if we just played more as a team we could have got there, and I don’t think we looked tough enough out there.”

The loss followed up their loss to Victoria from just eight days prior where the Glacier Kings tied it with two late goals in the third only to turn around and get scored on with just 4 seconds left in regulation to lose.

FRIDAY JANUARY 17 7:30 P.M. VS CAMPBELL RIVER STORM

The Glacier Kings return to their regular two game weekend schedule starting tonight with a road matchup in Campbell River.

The Storm have extended their lead at the top of the North Division, now sitting nine points clear of second place Port Alberni.

Toneff said he’s hoping his team can carry the pace of play through most of the game and generate more offensive looks than they have in games prior.

“We’ve been struggling to score a little bit for whatever reason, and I don’t think we now have a team that should struggle to score so I want a little bit more offence out of our group without giving up too much defensively.”

It’s nearly been two months since the two teams last played each other, with Campbell River winning 3-1 on home ice back on November 29.

SATURDAY JANUARY 18 7:45 P.M. VS NANAIMO BUCCANEERS

The Glacier Kings wrap up the weekend at home with another matchup against the Nanaimo Buccaneers Saturday night.

The two sides met just two weeks prior to this matchup in the Comox Valley, with the Glacier Kings blanking the Buccaneers 4-0.

Despite their lack of wins in recent games, Toneff said the Buccaneers have been playing well of late and it’s important to grow their lead over them even more in the standings.

“The playoff race is tight, and we just need to find a way to make sure we get every point available in the next few games here.”

The Lake Cowichan Kraken defeated the Buccaneers Thursday night 3-2, moving into a third-place tie in the North Division with the Glacier Kings while having two more games played.

They are sitting at 33 points each, with Nanaimo on the outside of the playoff picture with 29 points.
