BC cabinet committee made to respond to US tariff threats

To protect BC’s economy from American tariff threats, Premier David Eby is putting together a cabinet committee.

The BC government says the committee includes several cabinet ministers, with Eby at the head. It will co-ordinate a unified approach to protect the economy and workers from the United States tariff threats.

If imposed, a threatened 25 percent tariff on Canadian exports could heavily impact Canada as the country exports $1.9 billion in daily goods and services to the United States.

Eby says the tariffs are a direct attack on families.

“This threat isn’t going away anytime soon, not while this president is in power. Every minister has an important role to play in fighting back,” said Eby.

Minister of Housing Ravi Kahlon will chair the committee, coordinating actions with the other members to respond to the threats while growing the economy.

The province says this announcement comes as part of a three-point strategy, which includes bringing tougher counteractions, expediting projects, supporting industry workers, and diversifying trade markets so they are less reliant on American markets.

Along with Kahlon, the cabinet includes Minister of Jobs and Economic Development and Innovation Diana Gibson, Minister of Finance Brenda Bailey, Minister of Energy and Climate Solutions Adrian Dix, Minister of Agriculture and Food Lana Popham, Minister of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship Randene Neill, Minister of State for Trade Rick Glumac, Minister of Forests Ravi Parmar, Minister of Mining and Critical Minerals Jagrup Brar, and Minister of Environment and Parks Tamara Davidson.
