Town of Comox announces adoption of Accessibility Assessment and Action Plan

Comox Town Council has adopted a new plan for accessibility which will make them the first local government in the Comox Valley to have done so.

They’ve adopted an Accessibility Assessment and Action Plan at their February 5 council meeting, demonstrating a commitment to an inclusive and barrier-free community.

Comox Mayor Nicole Minions said the adoption of the plan is an important step forward for the town.

“It aligns with our Strategic Plan and legislative requirements, and we look forward to implementing meaningful improvements that will enhance accessibility throughout our community.”

The plan was developed based on principles of the Comox Valley Local Government Framework and aligns with the Accessible BC Act.

The plan includes integrating age-friendly community planning into the Official Community Plan, subsidizing recreation programs, and improving accessibility in public spaces.

Regular reviews of the plan will be conducted with the help of the Comox Valley Accessibility Committee, Comox Valley Social Planning Society, and input from residents, lived experience individuals, and accessibility experts.

Public engagement can be submitted on the Accessibility Plan by email, phone, or on the Town’s website.
