Kings Corner: February 14-16 weekend

WEEK IN REVIEW

The Glacier Kings were able to come away with a 1-1 split over last weekend’s home and home series against the Lake Cowichan Kraken.

It was the road teams being victorious in both games, with the Glacier Kings taking Friday night’s contest 6-4 in Lake Cowichan, and the Kraken taking Saturday’s game 4-3 at the Comox Valley Sports Centre.

Head Coach Curtis Toneff gave credit to his group for capitalizing on their chances in Friday night’s game.

“We found a way to win, there was a lot of strange bounces in the game, but I thought we were the better team that night.”

The Glacier Kings were unable to complete the weekend sweep though, despite holding a 3-1 second period lead in Saturday night’s game against the Kraken.

Toneff said it was disappointing to not come away with the weekend sweep but called it a good weekend overall after winning Wednesday’s game in Westshore.

“We obviously have to be better on our home ice and find a way to shut teams down.”

The weekend split kept the Glacier Kings in fourth place in the North Division standings, still sitting just one game back of the Kraken but still possessing a game in hand over them.

FRIDAY FEBRUARY 14 7:30 P.M. VS PENINSULA PANTHERS

The Glacier Kings will look to lock up a playoff spot this weekend starting off with a road contest Friday night in Peninsula.

The two sides haven’t seen each other since December 7, with the Panthers coming away with a 6-2 road victory.

Toneff said it doesn’t matter who they face at this point, it’s all about getting their game ready for playoffs despite not officially having a spot claimed.

“We really want our game to look a certain way and it’s definitely coming you can see it with our chemistry in games and practice here.”

Peninsula has dominated the season series so far, winning all three times they’ve played so far.

The Panthers sit in second place in the South Division and will be looking to secure home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs this weekend.

SATURDAY FEBRUARY 15 7:45 P.M. VS CAMPBELL RIVER STORM

The Glacier Kings wrap up this weekend’s action with their final matchup of the year against the Campbell River Storm Saturday night at home.

The two sides last met in the Comox Valley on February 1, with the Storm dominating their way to a 6-1 victory.

Toneff said little things have turned into big things in previous matchups this year and it’s something they’ll have to correct with a potential first round playoff matchup looming.

“We have to limit them and execute on our side, and we’ll be feeling good about ourselves heading into playoffs.”

Heading into the weekend, the Glacier Kings magic number to clinch a playoff spot is two, needing either a win and a Nanaimo loss or two Buccaneer losses to clinch a playoff spot.
