Increased water flows set for Puntledge River this week

Residents should stay clear of the Puntledge River as there will be higher water and a stronger current.

BC Hydro crews will be testing the equipment of the Puntledge Hydroelectric System, resulting in increases in water releases from the Comox Dam.

On Monday night, the flow increased from 15 cubic meters per second to 50 cubic meters, with Hydro saying it could go as high as 125 cubic meters per second during testing.

Hydro Public Affairs Coordinator Karla Louwers says because of the high flow, they ask you to stay away from all reaches of the river at this time.

“Temporary safety awareness signage is in place along the river,” said Louwers.

“Inflows are expected to remain above normal for the remainder of the week. Once testing is complete, we will continue operating the Puntledge River Powerhouse and maintain an increased spill of 50 cubic meters per second through March 5.”

They are asking people to remain cautious along all reaches of the river.

The testing runs today and Thursday.
