Telegraph Cove resort begins to rebuild after devastating fire

The Telegraph Cove Resort has started to rebuild ahead of tourism season.

On Wednesday, owners Gordon and Marilyn Graham said in a post on the resort website that they now have approvals required from the Ministry of Environment and Fisheries and Oceans Canada to go ahead.

The first steps will be to remove debris and clean up the remaining structures. Thankfully, they say, none of the accommodation buildings were damaged.

After that, they will start rebuilding the docks, Whale Watch Office, Bear Tours office, and build a new electrical distribution building. They will also get the sewage treatment plant back online.

They plan to have food services on site for the season while the restaurant is rebuilt.

All the clean-up and repair work will be done by North Island companies. Hardy Bay Sawmills is currently milling yellow cedar to replace the boardwalk and docks. Alert Bay Towing has their barge and crane on site doing clean-up work.

Abernethy Contracting is in charge of organizing and scheduling the companies involved in the clean-up and rebuilding.

The Grahams are thanking everyone who has offered support locally, and from around the world.
