New Indigenous Artwork presented to Cumberland council

New Indigenous artwork is featured in Cumberland council chambers.

On Monday’s meeting, K’omoks First Nation Hegus Nicole Rempel presented a cedar panel art piece made by nation artist Sean Frank to mayor and council.

The art was made to recognize the nation, with the Village saying its theme is the legend of Queneesh and features the Comox Glacier and the great whale on the mountain.

“Mist from the whale’s blowhole represent the spirits of K’ómoks ancestors,” said the Village.

“Light and healing energy can be seen radiating from the sun and a red cedar rope encircling the panel represents the tree of life that has supplied K’ómoks with essentials for existence for centuries. Below the cedar panel are eagle feathers that represent the strength of the community to work and live together in harmony.”

The Village adds along with recognizing the nation, the artwork is intended to show the commitment to reconciliation.
