Federal NDP star Charlie Angus in Cumberland to support candidates

Controversial NDP MP Charlie Angus is coming to Cumberland on Thursday to support two federal NDP candidates.

Angus, who has been caught on camera multiple times cursing at people for asking him questions and calling them “Putin trolls” and “fascists,” is coming to the Island. Angus, first elected in 2004, announced last year he won’t seek re-election. Since then, he has held rallies to support Ukraine, boost other NDP ridings, and has had several profanity-laden run-ins with independent journalists and constituents.

Angus has a long history of controversial statements. In 2023, he took to social media to mock a woman who died while waiting for an organ transplant. During the pandemic, he was in favour of using the Emergencies Act to shut down the truck convoy protest in Ottawa, claiming it had been influenced by Russian agents.

And last year he tabled a Private Member’s Bill which proposed to make it illegal to positively promote oil and gas development. That drew the ire of Indigenous communities looking to profit from the industry, including Stephen Buffalo, a member of the Samson Cree Nation and president and CEO of the Indian Resource Council, who called it “one of the most contemptible pieces of legislation since the introduction of the Indian Act in 1876.”

On Thursday Angus will be welcomed by North Island – Powell River NDP candidate Tanille Johnston, and Courtenay-Alberni candidate Gord Johns.

On his social media, Angus called his visit the “Elbows Up Resistance Tour.” He will visit Nanaimo on Friday before heading to Edmonton for Sunday.

“Heading to Vancouver Island as part of the resistance tour and to put the run on some very toxic MAGA MAPLE candidates,” Angus said on his Facebook page.

The Comox Valley rally will be at the Number 6 Mine Park in Cumberland from 7-8 pm.

Registration is required to attend, visit the NDP’s website for the link.
