The next step has been taken towards Comox’s firehall being upgraded.
The Town of Comox announced a contract has been awarded to MacDonald Hagarty Architects to prepare designs for replacing the office portion of the existing station.
Fire Chief Gord Schreiner said since its opening in 1978, the number of crew and calls received has grown.
“Today, we have eight full-time firefighters and 52 paid-on-call members responding to over 900 incidents annually. We’ve simply outgrown the space.”
Design work is expected to be completed this fall, before moving into the financial planning phase before construction starts as early as the spring of 2026.
The town will cover two-thirds of the upgrade costs, with the district (Area B) to fund the rest.
The upgrades will focus on expanding office and training areas, enhancing firefighter facilities, offering on-site affordable housing, and building infrastructure improvements.
In addition to the space limitations the building faces, an outdated electrical system, a leaking roof, and poor accessibility are things which don’t meet modern standards for disaster resilience.
