Back Road safety at Valley View Drive intersection starting in August

Construction will soon begin on Back Road to help make a key intersection safer.

Starting August 5, crews from the City of Courtenay and contractors will be installing a small roundabout and median islands, as well as a 150-metre section of guardrails on Back Road at the Valley View Drive intersection.

Two-way traffic will be maintained throughout the construction area as much as possible, but single-lane alternating may happen at times.

The goal of the project is decreasing the speed of drivers and the likelihood of collisions by improving road safety for all commuters.

The project is one of the recommendations from the Back Road traffic study, which was commissioned following a request from Back Road residents to calm the traffic in their area.

Valley View Drive at Back Road will be closed nightly on August 14 and 15, and from the 18-21, with a detour available at Hobson Avenue.

The project is expected to be completed on August 21.
