Construction approved by Courtenay Council on new multi-use path on Lake Trail

A new pathway will soon make it safer for people to travel between two Comox Valley schools this fall.

Courtenay Council have approved construction on phase 1 of the Lake Trail multi-use path, making a safer connection between Arden Elementary and Lake Trail Community School for pedestrians and bikers.

Mayor Bob Wells said they’re glad to see the project take its next steps after lots of public opinion.

“Students and residents have been speaking up for a safer west Courtenay, and their voices made a real difference.”

The multi-use path will have a 620-metre gravel trail on the north side of Lake Trail Road, improved bike lanes, upgraded bus stop, and drainage improvements.

The path will improve the connection between the two schools and encourage more people to walk or bike for a more active and sustainable way to commute.

Phase 1 is expected to go tender before the end of the summer with construction planned for later this fall.

Phase 2 will follow once pending environmental permits are approved.

The project was requested by Arden Elementary Green Team members and community advocates and is being funded in part by the Comox Valley Regional District Area C and the Province of B.C.’s Active Transportation Infrastructure Grants Program.
