Apps still missing despite Saturday search

Despite a near 12 hour search on Castlecrag Mountain on Saturday, Comox Valley Ground Search and Rescue say local hiker Sylvia Apps is still missing.

Comox Valley G-SAR left the following message on their Facebook page Sunday.

Comox Valley SAR along with RCMP conducted specific area searches for Sylvia Apps yesterday. Areas of interest on Castlecrag Mountain were searched using a SAR dog and RCMP K9 team along with SAR members performing open grid sweeps. A specialized rope team was also deployed to perform ‘on-rope’ searches of canyons and chutes near the summit.

Supported by Grizzly Helicopters, the team spent about 12 hours in the field yesterday but no further clues were found.

Despite our efforts yesterday and the efforts of family and friends over the past week, Sylvia’s location remains unknown.

The case will remain with the RCMP as a missing persons investigation.

We thank each and every person and organization who assisted with the search for Sylvia Apps. Our thoughts are with the family at this time.

The 69 year old Apps has not been seen since July 8th, although SAR teams managed to recover several of her personal belongings through the various search efforts. Those include a phone, hiking poles, her backpack and a sweater.
