Big funding shot for school district trades training

Comox Valley School District 71 is receiving some major funding from the Industry Training Authority.

The money will go towards apprenticeship programs during this school year.

Local MLA Don McRae says the $30,000 funding shot is a win-win for everyone involved.

Students in grades 10, 11 and 12 will have the chance to work with local employers to pick up some practical experience.

McRae says it’s a great opportunity for young people to earn credits towards post-secondary education in jobs where there’s a lot of work available.

Last year’s apprenticeship programs registration numbers were the highest since the 2009 pre-recession years.

In 2014-2015, 1048 students registered in programs across B.C., representing an increase of more than 10% over 2013-2014.
