Comox Valley’s Liam Mackenzie signs MLS contract with Vancouver Whitecaps FC

A local soccer player has made their way onto the Vancouver Whitecaps FC first team.

Comox’s Liam Mackenzie signed an MLS contract yesterday with the team as a Homegrown player through 2028 and includes a club option for 2029.

Mackenzie said he’s excited to grow with the team and show them what he can bring to the group.

“This club has meant a lot to me growing up, and it’s a special feeling to now be part of the first team.”

The 18-year-old midfielder originally joined the Whitecaps FC BMO Academy in 2020 and was selected to the MLS NEXT All-Star game in 2024.

Mackenzie made his MLS debut back in March as a short-term call-up, where he started and recorded an assist against Chicago Fire FC.

Whitecaps FC Sporting Director Axel Schuster said it’s exciting to see another player from B.C. signed to their roster.

“Liam has a fantastic work rate and has adapted well to every level he has stepped up to.”

Mackenzie has also represented Canada at the international U-17 level, starting three of five appearances at the 2023 Concacaf U-17 Championship, and was an alternate at the 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Indonesia.
