Greyhound takes exit ramp on regional bus service

Greyhound is getting the go ahead to cancel bus service between Nanaimo and the North Island, but BC’s Passenger Transportation Board is allowing another company to take over the routes.

Greyhound says it just wasn’t getting enough passengers to break even on 3 BC routes… including the runs from Nanaimo to Campbell River, and Campbell River to Port Hardy… so it went to the Board for permission to drop them.

At the same time, Tofino Bus Services – which has a cooperation deal with Greyhound – came over to say it sees enough demand that it could make a go of the routes.

The Board has approved BOTH applications… and it’s looking at a third option for travellers to the north Island.

A company called Island Express Bus has applied to run daily return trips between Victoria and Campbell River, with stops in Duncan, Parksville and Courtenay.

No timelines have been provided on the transition from Greyhound to Tofino Bus Services.
