Residents invited to provide input on the future of the Courtenay and District Memorial Outdoor Pool

Community members and residents are being asked to have their say on the future of the Courtenay and District Memorial Outdoor Pool at Lewis Park.

The City of Courtenay is seeking feedback through a public survey to determine the future of the pool.

Mayor Bob Wells says the pool has been part of the community for generations and they need residents to look at the proposed options for the future so city council can make the best decision for the community.

“We’ve heard clearly from the public that they value outdoor aquatic services and want this facility to remain at Lewis Park.”

The pool was built in 1949 and is nearing the end of its life, and it could close permanently with no major repairs or renovation or replacement plan in place.

Previous public engagement showed strong support for the facility and confirmed residents wanted the pool to stay where it is despite being within a riparian zone and at risk of flooding.

The city has focused all their design options on keeping the pool at the existing Lewis Park site either through repair, renovation or replacement.

Project staff will be at two open houses to speak on the pool, the first at the Comox Valley Farmers’ Market on September 27 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and at the Lewis Centre from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on the same day.

The public survey is now open until October 19, and all feedback will be shared with council later this fall to guide the future of the pool.
