Students in five different Comox Valley schools gained first-hand knowledge after participating in an event to explore pathways in skilled trades.
The event was open to female students in grades 9 to 12 in the district with a focus on automotive, carpentry, baking, heavy duty mechanics, plumbing, metal work and much more.
Careers coordinator Tammy Williamson says the experience students get at these workshops are invaluable to help shape their future goals and aspirations.
“It’s really a meet and greet where students are making connections with community members and learning about pathways to the trades,” said Williamson. “They’re hearing directly from employers about what industries are looking for and discovering opportunities like our dual-credit programs through North Island College (NIC).”
The event showcased recent graduates, and the district says having a perspective from former students just goes to show exactly how beneficial programs like this can be.
“Students also met a recent Youth Train in Trade graduate who demonstrated her wire-jewelry craft, offering a creative example of the precision and artistry involved in trades careers,” said the district.
The event was sponsored by many community partners, and the district says the contributions helped create an engaging day that highlighted the range of opportunities for students.
Several other events are offered by the Comox Valley School District to help inspire students and build connections.
