High Streamflow Advisory issued for Vancouver Island, Sunshine Coast

The B.C. River Forecast Centre has issued a high streamflow advisory for Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast.

The centre said a strong atmospheric river is expected along B.C.’s south coast starting Sunday, with wet conditions likely to last several days.

“Current weather models indicate the initial pulse of heavy precipitation will impact northern and western Vancouver Island late Sunday into Monday, before moving southward and impacting the entire island,” the centre said.

Localized high flows are expected from heavy rain and snow runoff, with river levels beginning to rise Monday and peaking by midweek.

“Smaller rivers and streams may respond quickly to intense rainfall and could experience rapid rises during periods of heavy precipitation,” the centre said.

Residents are reminded to stay safe around rivers and to be prepared for challenging driving conditions and potential road washouts.
