BC’s winter tire rules have kicked in and they’ll be enforced on a few island highways, including the Malahat.

Mike Lorimer is with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.

He says the symbols on your tires sidewall will tell you if they meet the standards.

Lorimer adds Trucks will have to carry chains.

He says even though it’s still warm out during the day, there’s already been morning frost that can lead to problems on the roads.

The winter tire rules also apply to Highways 14, 4 and 28 and the fines can be as much as $121.
