GoFundMe launched to support 13-year-old Comox Valley girl diagnosed with cancer

The Comox Valley community is being asked to rally behind a teenage girl and her family as she undergoes cancer treatment.

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched in support of 13-year-old Kate Szkwarek, who was recently diagnosed with leukemia.

Szkwarek has begun treatment at BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver.

“She is receiving excellent care, is a fighter and we are confident she will beat this disease into remission,” fundraiser organizer Cam Matthews said.

Szkwarek’s treatment is expected to span two years, with the first six to nine months spent in Vancouver before she can return home to complete treatment.

The fundraiser page describes her as a fun-loving young girl and a valued member of the Comox Valley United Soccer Club community.

Funds raised through the campaign will help offset travel and living expenses for her parents and two sisters, as well as time away from work while the family supports her during treatment.

As of April 14, the fundraiser had raised nearly $53,000 toward its $55,000 goal.
