Stage 1 water restrictions to take effect in CVRD May 1

Water use will be restricted in the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) starting next month.

Stage 1 water restrictions will take effect May 1 for the Black Creek-Oyster Bay, Comox Valley, Royston and Union Bay water systems.

CVRD manager of water services Mike Herschmiller said residents should consider water use across all systems as warmer weather approaches.

“Although we may continue to see rain for the next few weeks, this time of year is a good reminder for residents to think about how they use water and to conserve when possible.”

Under Stage 1 restrictions, lawn and garden sprinkling is permitted from 5 to 8 a.m. and 7 to 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday for even-numbered addresses, and Wednesday, Friday and Sunday for odd-numbered addresses.

The CVRD said in a news release efficient water use affects more than the amount of water available for natural ecosystems.

It also helps reduce the cost of operating the water system and may lessen the need for future upgrades to water supply infrastructure, while helping ensure sufficient water for fire protection during drier months.
