People interested in becoming firefighters in Courtenay will have a chance to learn more about the job next month.
The Courtenay Fire Department is recruiting volunteers for the 2026-27 training year and will host an open house May 28 from 6 to 8 p.m. for prospective applicants.
Deputy Fire Chief Jonathan Welsh said the department looks forward to meeting potential recruits.
“Our program gives recruits the skills they need to earn professional firefighter certification in just one year, the same standard use by fire departments across North America.”
To be eligible, applicants must live within the City of Courtenay or the Courtenay Fire Protection District, be at least 18 years old, hold a valid B.C. driver’s licence and be willing to obtain a current driver’s abstract and criminal record check.
The department hopes to recruit 12 volunteers for the upcoming training year. Applications close June 5.
Medical and fitness testing will take place in early June, followed by interviews.
Successful recruits will begin training in September and must commit to weekly Tuesday night training sessions.
