Union for employees of Comox Valley Sports, Aquatic Centres issues 72-hour strike notice to CVRD

Employees at the Comox Valley Sports Centre and Comox Valley Aquatic Centre are taking job action.

The United Steelworkers, Local 1-1937, which represents employees at both facilities, has issued a 72-hour strike notice to the Comox Valley Regional District.

Union members held a strike vote on May 4, giving the union a mandate for strike action.

CVRD chief administrative officer James Warren said the two sides have not been able to reach agreement on key issues.

“We have met in good faith, offering proposals that reflect our commitment to supporting employees while maintaining fiscal responsibility to our residents.”

Negotiations began Feb. 11 to renew the collective agreement, which expired Jan. 31.

The two sides have met for six days of bargaining to renew and amend the agreement.

The CVRD said the parties reached common ground on several issues, but a final agreement has not been reached.

“We stand prepared to return to the bargaining table to continue the discussions and are hopeful of getting to a successful agreement,” said Warren.

The CVRD said its latest proposal is fair and aligned with other recently settled collective agreements.
