Comox Valley residents asked to not flush due to ongoing emergency incident

The Comox Valley Regional District crews are responding to a major sewer leak near the Comox Marina.

A statement from the CVRD said the leak was identified around 9:30 a.m. on May 26, and crews are working to minimize impacts to residents, businesses and the surrounding environment.

“We appreciate everyone helping do your part to reduce flows into our sewage system,” explains general manager of engineering services Kris La Rose. “Reduction in the toilet flushes and non-essential water entering the system is helping us to complete the repairs needed and reduce the volume of wastewater spilling into the marine environment.”

The CVRD is asking residents to not:

  • Flush toilets
  • Use water that drains into the sewage system
  • Shower or have baths
  • Use dishwashers or washing machines
  • Harvest shellfish or marine resources from the affected area

Residents are also advised to avoid going into the ocean, swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding or other water related activities near the shoreline around Goose Spit and the Comox Marina.

Anyone in the area should avoid contact with ocean water, shoreline areas, mudflats, standing water and children and pets should be kept away from beaches and estuary access points.

The CVRD said the advisory does not apply to Island Health facilities or licensed care providers.

This incident is not impacting drinking water supply.
