Weapons and cash seized by Comox Valley RCMP following suspicious vehicle report

A report from the public about a suspicious vehicle led to the seizure of weapons and cash in the Comox Valley.

Comox Valley RCMP said officers received a report shortly after noon on April 30 about two people believed to be using drugs in a vehicle parked in the Comox Valley Aquatic Centre parking lot.

Officers attended and found a man in the driver’s seat who was drifting in and out of consciousness with the keys in the ignition. Police also located a woman associated with the vehicle who showed signs of drug impairment.

Both were arrested for possession of a controlled substance. The driver was also arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle.

Police said a subsequent search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of:

  • 10 knives
  • 11 cellphones
  • A digital scale with suspected drug residue
  • Approximately $2,000 in cash
  • Two imitation handguns
  • An expandable baton

Const. Monika Terragni of the Comox Valley RCMP said the incident highlights the role the public can play in helping to identify potential safety concerns.

“Impaired driving, weapons and suspected drug activity create serious safety concerns, and we appreciate community members who continue to report suspicious behaviour when they see it.”

Police noted the imitation handguns closely resembled real firearms, which can create risks for both the public and officers.

“Decisions involving weapons are made in seconds, which is why incident involving replica guns carry very serious potential consequences,” said Terragni.

RCMP said investigations involving drug impairment, weapons and controlled substances are complex and may require additional analysis, consultation and followup before charge recommendations are finalized.

The investigation remains ongoing and police said charge recommendations will be forwarded upon completion.
