Courtenay unveils plans to celebrate Canada Day

Two days of free, family-friendly Canada Day events are being planned in Courtenay.

The celebrations begin June 30 with the Night Before Concert at Lewis Park, running from 4 to 10 p.m.

The free evening event will include community performances, cultural programming, food, vendors and live music.

On July 1, the Comox Valley Concert Band will kick off the day at 9 a.m. at Randy Wiwchar Plaza in front of the Sid Williams Theatre.

The 5th Street Mile fun run starts at 9:30 a.m., followed by the Canada Day parade from 10 to 11:30 a.m. along 5th Street.

Festivities continue at Lewis Park from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with family activities, live entertainment, food trucks, vendors and information booths.

A cake-cutting ceremony will take place at 12:30 p.m., followed by a children’s bike draw from 3 to 3:30 p.m.

A free public swim will also be offered at the Courtenay and District Outdoor Pool from noon to 5 p.m.

Additional community activities include the Evergreen Tea Dance at Native Sons Hall and an open house at the Courtenay and District Museum.

Courtenay Mayor Bob Wells said the event offers a chance for families to come together and enjoy two days of community fun.

“From the parade and family activities to the free swim, museum open house and live entertainment, there’s something for everyone.”

A full schedule, event details and updates are available on the city’s website.
