Campfire ban lifted by most CVRD fire departments, still prohibited in Courtenay

A campfire ban, which has been in place since May long weekend, has been lifted by most Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) fire departments.

The CVRD revealed the following departments have lifted the fire ban:

  • Comox Fire Rescue
  • Cumberland Fire Department
  • Denman Island Fire Rescue
  • Fanny Bay Volunteer Fire Department
  • Hornby Island Fire Rescue
  • Merville Fire Department
  • Mount Washington Fire Department
  • Oyster River Fire Rescue
  • Ships Point Volunteer Fire Department
  • Union Bay Fire Rescue

CVRD regional rural fire chief Bruce Green said the recent rainy and cooler weather is the reason for the lift of the campfire ban.

“Weather conditions can change quickly and a campfire ban may be put back in place to help protect our community.”

Despite most fire departments lifting the ban, the change doesn’t apply within the City of Courtenay or the Courtenay Fire Department’s fire protection areas.

Category two and three fires are still prohibited across all Comox Valley fire departments.

Residents are encouraged to monitor their local fire department’s website for updates.
