The Comox Valley Regional District says a partial ban of Category one fires, or campfires, has been reinstated in parts of the region in conjunction with the BC Wildfire Service’s fire ban for the Coastal Fire Centre.
The CVRD says the ban applies to Union Bay, Denman Island and Hornby Island, while campfires remain allowed in the Merville, Mount Washington and Oyster River fire protection areas.
The regional district says fire rings at Joe Walker Park will be removed and the barbecue area will be closed to further reduce wildfire risk.
“The return of hot, dry weather has increased wildfire risk in parts of the Comox Valley,” said Bruce Green, regional rural fire chief for the Comox Valley Regional District. “Reinstating the campfire ban in these areas is an important step in reducing the risk of human-caused wildfires and protecting our communities.”
Larger Category two and three open burns remain prohibited throughout the Comox Valley.
