A hiker was injured in a black bear attack near Cumberland over the weekend.
The B.C. Conservation Officer Service said in a social media post that two hikers and their off-leash dogs were using trails near Bevan Wetlands on Sunday, July 19.
The hikers encountered a family of black bears in dense brush while searching for their dogs. One of the adult bears attacked and injured one of the hikers.
The injured hiker was taken to hospital and later released.
The B.C. Conservation Officer Service investigated and determined the attack was defensive in nature. As a result, officers will not attempt to locate or destroy the bears.
Warning signs have been placed along the trail and at nearby trailheads.
Conservation officers will continue to monitor bear activity in the area.
The Conservation Officer Service is reminding the public to take precautions to reduce the risk of human-wildlife conflicts, including keeping pets on a leash and carrying bear spray.
