New program helps Islanders with MS

It’s getting easier for multiple sclerosis patients from mid and north Vancouver Island to connect with specialists thanks to new technology.

Island Health’s TeleMS program lets patients meet with neurologists and psychiatrists via video link, with support from a specialized nurse, so they don’t have to go all the way to Victoria for appointments.

Neurologist Olinka Hrebicek is the Director of the Vancouver Island MS Clinic.

She says there has been an explosion in new medications to treat MS.

Hrebicek says if patients have questions, it’s now much easier for them to get answers.

Island Health launched the TeleMS program last December and since then, more than 130 MS patients have used it.
