The Comox Valley Regional District is expanding its campfire ban.
As of noon Friday, Aug. 14, campfires will no longer be allowed in the Oyster River, Merville and Mount Washington fire protection areas.
The CVRD says the expanded ban is in response to elevated wildfire risk and follows bans already in place in other areas of the regional district.
“Wildfire risk remains elevated across the province, and after a prolonged period of dry weather, we need to do everything we can to prevent human-caused fires,” says CVRD Regional Rural Fire Chief Bruce Green. “Expanding the campfire ban is an important step in reducing that risk, and we appreciate everyone doing their part to help keep our communities, natural areas, and emergency responders safe.”
The beach fire program at Goose Spit Park has also ended for the season and fire rings are being removed. Fire rings at Joe Walker Park are unavailable, while the barbecue shelters at Joe Walker Park and Royston Seaside Trail remain closed.
The CVRD says smoking remains prohibited in all of its parks.
