5 small North Island wildfires out of control after dozens sparked by lightning

Lightning strikes have sparked more than a dozen small wildfires on the North Island since Thursday, Aug. 13.

Most of the 17 active fires on Vancouver Island are less than one hectare in size and are now classified as held or under control.

The fires are located near Gold River, Woss Lake and south of Port Hardy.

The BC Wildfire Service has five fires listed as out of control in the North Island region, including two that were discovered Monday, Aug. 17. None is threatening structures or critical infrastructure.

A human-caused wildfire that started Saturday south of Fanny Bay and grew to about half a hectare is also under control.
