Island Health offers back-to-school health tips as first bell draws near

It’s just about time to trade in the sunscreen for school buses, and Island Health is reminding parents to run a few health checks for their back-to-school list.

The local health authority reccommends booking an eye exam before a child starts kindergarten and keeping up with regular dental checkups.

Parents are also being reminded to make sure routine vaccinations are up to date, including school-based immunizations offered in Grades 6 and 9.

Also, with flu season around the corner, Island Health recommends everyone six months and older get a flu shot every fall.

“A healthy school year starts before the first bell rings,” said Island Health in a statement on social media.

Island Health says getting these things taken care of before school starts can help children head into the new academic year healthy and ready to learn.
