Investigation planned following fire at Comox Valley Waste Management Centre

Emergency crews extinguished a fire at the Comox Valley Waste Management Centre in Cumberland over the weekend, according to Comox Strathcona Waste Management.

CSWM said the fire broke out Sunday in the mattress disposal area and was contained there, with no risk to residents or staff. One major piece of equipment was damaged.

“An investigation into the cause of the fire will take place,” said Vivian Schau, senior manager of CSWM Services. “One major piece of equipment was damaged as a result of the fire. We’re very thankful that the fire was detected early, fire fighters responded quickly, and no one was hurt as a result.”

Cumberland Fire Rescue responded with help from crews from Oyster River and Courtenay.

The waste management centre remains open and regular garbage, recycling and compost collection is not affected.

However, the Comox Valley and Campbell River waste management centres are unable to accept mattresses. Residents are being asked to hold on to mattresses until further notice.
