Four employees at a Courtenay building supply store are being praised for helping rescue a man from the Courtenay River during a recent rainstorm.
The incident happened a couple of weeks ago when Home Hardware employee Daniel Kassinen heard a splash and calls for help coming from beneath a pedestrian bridge.
He went to investigate and found a man struggling in the cold, fast-moving water.
Kassinen called on co-workers Jordan Vester, Warren Smith and Travis Leggett for help.
The four men worked together to pull the man from the river and up a steep embankment, getting him to safety before emergency responders arrived.
The RCMP later described their actions as an incredible display of courage and quick thinking.
“It’s a powerful example of neighbours helping neighbours and the kind of community spirit that exists in Courtenay,” said Home Hardware in a media statement.
