Update on the Comox Valley Landfill Closure Project

For the past couple of months, crews have been working on the Comox Valley landfill closure project.

Mark Rutten, the General Manager of Engineering Services at the Comox Strathcona Waste Management group, says the majority of the work will be finished by the end of the year.

He adds the rest of the work, like final landscaping, will be completed in the spring. He says if that work is done now, it could be subject to erosion during the winter months.

Rutten says the work is required when a landfill is close to reaching its full capacity, which is the case with the Comox Valley site.

Rutten says the project involves a 70% closure of the landfill, and they’re currently installing the liner and gas systems as part of the project.
