Immigrant Welcome Centre dispels rumours surrounding refugees
The local Immigrant Welcome Centre is working to dispel some of the myths around refugees.
The Federal Government has pledged to resettle 10,000 Syrian refugees before the end of the year.
Centre spokesperson Jim Brennan says there’s often a perception that refugees will take away from services needed by Canadians, such as jobs and medical services.
Temporary screening areas have been set up in Toronto and Montreal in preparation for their arrival to Canada. Brennan says about 2,000 are expected to resettle in British Columbia.
You can find the Comox Valley branch of the Immigrant Welcome Centre at 1001 Lewis Avenue in Courtenay.
